Cabo Bay
|
Situated on the southern tip of Mexico’s Pacific Peninsula in Baja California, Cabo San Lucas became popular for big game fishing in the 50s and 60s and was visited by the likes of John Wayne and Ronald Reagan. It didn’t start developing as a resort until the 70s and it still has a lot of natural charm though this may be fading fast judging by the amount of building going on. It has a beautiful bay surrounded by sandy beaches, a rocky peninsula with secluded beaches that can be reached by water taxi and a large marina full of expensive-looking boats. It has plenty of facilities for water sports – jet skis, parascending, kayaks – plus loads of boats to hire for fishing, and numerous bars ready for partying the night away – prices are attractive – e.g. bucket of 6 beers plus nachos and salsa for 10 US dollars. I think we arrived at the right time of year as it did not appear to be very busy and the temperature was perfect – about 27C with a nice breeze. The sea is very clear and perfect for swimming – so long as you avoid the jet ski areas. It was a bit irritating when walking around the Marina to be asked every few steps if we wanted to buy something, but the vendors were nowhere near as pushy as I have seen in other areas and gave up with good grace when we said ‘no thank you’.

The area is also renowned for wildlife – the Marina was full of pelicans who seem to take over any stationary fishing boat and we saw one or two seals following the boats. The sea is a haven for grey whales and we were delighted to see two from the ship as we left the bay, though we didn’t manage to get a decent photo – people who went on a special whale watching boat tour saw a lot more.
Now we have two more days at sea before reaching San Francisco which is about 1000 miles north – will be much colder there I expect…
